Bernd is director of the Center for Information Sciences and Databases and a group leader at the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics.

He received his Ph.D. in theoretical physics from the University of Konstanz under the supervision of Philipp Maaß. In his thesis, he developed models to describe dynamic properties in glassy systems. After his Ph.D., Bernd joined Genedata AG, a bioinformatics company based in Basel. There he participated in the build up of the new HTS business unit and established its software engineering group. Bernd became a Scrum Master and served the company as Head of Software Engineering (Screener) until the end of 2006 when he joined ETH Zurich to participate in the build-up of the Center for Information Sciences and Databases.

The main focus of his work is the build-up of information systems for basic and applied research in the area of biology and for life-science companies, and the integration of research analysis pipelines.
