Software Engineer

The Position
We are seeking a Software Engineer for scientific software and database development at the Center for Information Sciences and Databases (C-ISD) as soon as possible. The position is initially limited to one year, with the possibility of further extension.
C-ISD is an interdisciplinary bioinformatics service group building up computational tools ranging from databases for scientific data to reusable framework components enabling and supporting data analysis and knowledge generation in modern biology research and a member group of the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics.

The Software Engineer will work in an agile team of interdisciplinary experts, collaborate with colleagues in other Swiss academic institutions, and contribute to requirements analysis, design, implementation, testing and documentation of the C-ISD software solutions. In addition, the Software Engineer will contribute to the training and support of researchers at ETH Zurich and in the Swiss and international research community.
This technical position offers a high level of responsibility in a scientific software and service group in an agile and motivating environment.

Your Profile
The successful candidate will possess outstanding object-oriented design and programming skills in Java. Experience with other programming languages like Python or C++ is an advantage. Experience in GUI programming (possibly web-based), distributed applications programming and developing with relational databases are a must. A track record of successfully delivering software applications as part of a team, ideally in a professional environment, is a definite advantage.

The candidate should possess a Master of Science (or equivalent degree) in Computer Science or a closely related field such as Mathematics or Physics. Good knowledge and understanding of natural sciences in general, life science measurement technologies, and statistical methods is an asset.
In addition to the honed analytical abilities, this position demands very good communication skills (in English) to successfully support scientific research and operations at the ETH, in Swiss national research consortia and in industry collaborations. Beyond excellent technical abilities, the successful candidate will be a strong persistent goal achiever and a self-motivated team player.

Location
The position is located in Basel. The applicant is expected to travel to Zurich or other Swiss centers to meet our scientific customers.
